"Madonna goes to bed with her Blackberry"

This was the news in April 2008 and it summarises the reliance many of us & our students place on mobile technology.
Students appear to be highly active users of social networking sites, creating 'second life' avatars for themselves & developing creative and complex knowledge sets through the implementation of web 2.0 and mobile technology applications.

This wiki has been created by Carolyn Richardson of the University of Cumbria and the Open University and I welcome you in joining us in discussing possible future learning strategies to enhance our students experience of higher education.

The main focus for our discussion will be the impact of the myriad of technologies available to students both within and outwith the classroom.

Specifically we will discuss the proliferation of mobile technologies and applications such as social networking afforded by the development of web 2.0 technology on

  • learning styles & strategies,
  • knowledge acquisition
  • the dissemination of learning objects and
  • ways learners create meanings from information events garned from virtual environments
